Hey PMCs: Stop blaming “the media”

It is getting very tiresome to continue hearing operators in our community complain about how the ’left wing media’ the ’muckrakers’ the ‘liberals’ the ‘the blogosphere’ and their ‘pacifist do-gooder agenda’ are bringing our industry down and giving us a bad name. Anyone who sits around whining about books or articles or blogs or news reports that attack PMCs should stop wasting their breath and start doing something about it.

Yes, it’s true there are dozens of traditional media outlets that say negative things about us. Yes, there are many reporters who wake up every day with a pre-written story in their head about how bad PMCs are. And yes, in the most powerful battle, the battle of words, they are dominating the fight for ‘mindshare’ among politicians and the general citizenry. But guess what, it has been and always will be this way. And if you as an industry professional don’t get engaged it will remain so.

U.N. struggles to find new peacekeepers for Congo

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations is struggling to find 3,000 new peacekeepers for eastern Congo, scene of frequent fighting between armed groups, according to a letter from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released on Tuesday.

In the letter, Ban asked the Security Council, which in November approved a temporary increase in the U.N. force in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 17,000 to 20,000, to put pressure on countries to contribute the troops.

Blackwater’s Loss is DynCorp’s Gain

Last week, Blackwater Worldwide received the bad news that the U.S. Government could not renew its contract after the Iraqi government refused to renew its license to operate in their country. The decision stems from the 2007 incident where Blackwater security guards fired on, and killed 17 Iraqis in a disputed who-shot-first incident.

But their bad news could be investor’s gain.
